Before / after

Battery leak, undone

The clock battery on this Amiga 3000 board had leaked, and the corrosion was creeping toward the chips around it. The fix:

  • Sockets. Replaced the Paula and Denise sockets.
  • Chips. Removed three TTL chips affected by corrosion and fitted sockets with new chips.
  • Clean-up. Took the battery area back to clean copper with a fiberglass pen.
  • Parts. Replaced several passive components.
  • Board. Repaired a damaged trace.

How a machine gets restored

  1. 01 Inspect Open it up, photograph everything, and check for battery leakage, corrosion, and cracked plastics.
  2. 02 Repair Replace aging capacitors and failed chips, fix damaged traces, and fit new boards where an original can't be saved.
  3. 03 Clean and test Clean it inside and out, run diagnostics, then a long burn-in with real software, drives included where fitted.
  4. 04 Pack and ship Pack it as if it were my own. A 30-year-old computer only gets one trip through the mail, so packing gets as much care as the repair.

Why the name? It comes from the Amiga's copper coprocessor, the chip behind the raster bars, skies and scrollers on this page.
