Details
Eight Toshiba TC514402AZ-80 static column ZIP chips, enough to fill one 4MB bank of 32-bit Fast RAM in an Amiga 3000 (desktop or tower). Fast RAM is where the 68030 runs programs without sharing the bus with the graphics chips, so more of it means larger programs and less waiting.
Why static column matters
The A3000 can use two kinds of ZIP RAM: fast page mode and static column. Static column chips let the 68030 perform burst-mode memory cycles, which is the access pattern the A3000’s memory controller (Ramsey) is built around. The result is about 10% more speed than fast page mode ZIPs, most noticeable in system-heavy work and multitasking.
- Page mode ZIPs also work, so static column is the faster choice, not a requirement
- Kickstart 3.1 and later handle static column chips properly
- With an A3640 68040 card on Kickstart 2.04, page mode chips are the safer choice
- Every bank must be filled completely, and you can’t mix chip types or sizes within a bank
Specifications
- Toshiba TC514402AZ-80
- 1M x 4 bits per chip, 80 ns, which suits stock 16MHz and 25MHz A3000s
- 20-pin ZIP package (zig-zag in-line)
- Static column mode, supports 68030 burst access
A3000 memory background
The A3000 can hold up to 16MB of Fast RAM and 2MB of Chip RAM. Many shipped with 1MB of Fast RAM in DIP sockets and 1MB of soldered Chip RAM, plus eight empty sockets for the second megabyte of Chip RAM. Commodore’s intended upgrade path was to move the DIP Fast RAM into those sockets to reach 2MB of Chip RAM, then fill the ZIP sockets with higher-density chips like these.
Fitting notes
- Fast RAM is populated in banks of 8 chips. This set fills one bank
- The four ZIP banks hold up to 16MB with 1M x 4 chips, or 4MB with 256K x 4 chips
- For 1M x 4 chips, set jumper J852 to pins 1-2 (with J853 on 1-2) on boards with a later Ramsey. Early Ramsey revisions use different settings, so check your board and the A3000 manual
- Bank 0 shares its electrical connections with the DIP sockets U850D-U857D, so don’t use both
| Bank | Sockets | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bank 0 | U850-U857 | Shared with the DIP sockets U850D-U857D |
| Bank 1 | U858-U865 | Fill after Bank 0 |
| Bank 2 | U866-U873 | Fill after Bank 1 |
| Bank 3 | U874-U881 | Last bank, 16MB in total with 1M x 4 chips |
